Research Fellow in Complexity Science Mathematical Modelling

Faculty of Public Health & Policy

Salary:   £38,533 - £43,759 pro rata
Closing Date:   29th March 2018

We are looking for an enthusiastic research fellow to join a group of applied mathematicians at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in the faculties of Public Health and Policy and Epidemiology and Population Health. Their research includes complexity science modelling, econometrics and economic modelling, non-communicable disease and infectious disease modelling, and environmental health modelling.

The post holder will work on a new 3-year research programme using mathematical modelling methods to model health systems and their response to a payment for performance programme.  The research programme is funded by the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, and the Department for International Development’s Health Systems Research Initiative.  The post holder will be responsible for developing two complementary models, a system dynamics model (SDM) and an agent-based model (ABM), of the Tanzanian health system and its response to payment for performance.  The post holder will also validate the models and compare the simulation results of the SDM and ABM and explore their generalisability to another setting, Zambia.  The post holder will support capacity building of local partners in mathematical modelling methods, and work collaboratively with modellers in other UK institutions.

The post will be at RF level depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The post is available for 36 months and offers a unique and excellent opportunity to better understand how health systems function and respond to programmes, offering potential for major impact in academia and policy.  The selection criteria are outlined below:

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
  • Masters in applied mathematics, computer science, or public health/health economics with strong mathematical and quantitative content
  • Strong computer programming skills
  • Expertise analysing large quantitative datasets
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven experience in writing academic publications
  • Willingness for regular overseas travel of 1-2 weeks per trip

DESIRABLE CRITERIA
  • Excellent understanding of the configuration and functioning of health systems
  • Proven experience of working with partners from LMIC
  • PhD in mathematics, computer science, or public health/health economics or related disciplines
  • Experience in using Vensim, Stella and/or Netlogo software
  • Proven experience and knowledge of quasi-experimental methods for programme evaluation.
  • Experience of building capacity of research partners through collaborative research
  • Experience teaching and supervising at Masters level
