TWO POSTS: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Petrology/EPMA) and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Mining Geology/Remote Sensing/Tectonics)
in the
School of Geosciences, University of the Witwatersrand
The School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand invites applications from suitably-qualified candidates for two full-time permanent
academic positions at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the USA system), to commence on 1 July, 2018. The School enjoys a high international research profile, with strong multidisciplinary research programmes in
Geology, Geophysics and Palaeontology. The Geology Division in the School has a strong focus on the Precambrian geology of South Africa and other parts of Africa, with particular strengths being in geochemistry, petrology and economic geology. The School co-hosts
the national DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA) and leads the international AfricaArray Geophysics Programme. In the past 5 years it has significantly expanded its research facilities in microbeam analysis
(Cameca SX5 FE EPMA and Resolution-Element LA-ICP-MS facilities), geohydrology and isotope analysis (including a state-of-the-art metal-free, ultraclean isotope laboratory).
The School seeks to appoint candidates who will complement its existing research strengths and applied geology teaching focus. Preference will be
given to candidates with a proven expertise in (a) metamorphic petrology and electron probe microanalysis, and (b) mining geology, remote sensing and/or tectonics/geodynamics. The level of appointment and starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications
and experience.
Duties and Requirements: Within the School of Geosciences each successful
candidate is expected to establish a research programme and publish research results in internationally accredited journals, as well as raise research funds through competitive grants and attract postgraduate students. (S)he will be required to teach specialist
courses in (a) mineralogy/petrology/geochemistry or (b) mining geology, remote sensing and geodynamics at undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate levels. The successful petrology appointee will also assume responsibility for co-ordination of users for the
centrally-housed Cameca SX-Five Field Emission EPMA instrument and new methods development.
Applicants must provide evidence of:
·
A PhD in geological sciences
·
Specialisation in one or more of the designated fields
·
Good oral and written communication skills
The post is available at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level; the appointment at the more senior level will be based on evidence of a sustained track record of post-PhD academic research
and a teaching portfolio.
