Hi all Myself, Jess Barnes and Emilie Bruand are convening a session at Goldschmidt with the natty title "An Apatite for Discussing Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Topics" (Session 03K). Our keynote is Kim Tait from the Royal Ontario Museum and we have solicited talks by Madeleine Humphreys from Durham University (volatiles in apatite) and Brian Konecke from the University of Michigan (sulphur in apatite as an oxybarometer). We aim to have a broad session covering a wide range of processes and parts of the Solar System where apatite has given insight, and also on development of novel geochemical approaches using this key phosphate accessory mineral. We hope you will join us for a lively session and further whet your appetite for apatite. Cheers Craig, Jess and Emilie Session details: Apatite is an accessory phosphate mineral common in a wide variety of Earth and planetary materials. It has attracted attention in recent years as a repository of a wide range of chemical, isotopic and structural information. It has great promise as a petrogenetic indicator of magmatic, sub-solidus and fluid-mediated processes as its trace element budget is responsive to magmatic, metamorphic and fluid chemistry as well as redox. It also has been widely applied in studies of provenance and extraterrestrial volatiles. We invite contributions on novel applications and technique developments on the study of natural apatite, as well as pioneering experimental petrology investigations, that are aimed at understanding a wide range of geologic processes from across the Solar System. -- Craig Storey Associate Head (Research) Professor of Geology School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Burnaby Building University of Portsmouth Burnaby Road Portsmouth PO1 3QL UK +44 (0)2392842245 Website <http://www.port.ac.uk/school-of-earth-and-environmental-sciences/staff/craig-storey.html>
