Great advice here. Do build formative evaluation into the strategy as Eleanor suggests and always budget for it. If an organisation is in receipt of public money, including national lottery funds, it has a responsibility to demonstrate what has changed (or not) as a result of the injection of cash - the evaluation should credibly evidence the change (the difference made) and why, specifically, it happened.

There is material on HLF's website that you might find useful - our evaluation practice guidance, and, more sobering, our 'evaluation of evaluation' research which gives  insight into how many evaluations are produced that lack credibility. Include in your strategy the intention to choose any external evaluators on a generous timetable - and to bag a good one!

Read and post on our online community, too - there's some useful stuff there.

Have a great bank holiday everyone.

If you're back at work on Tuesday and use social media I'd really appreciate some solidarity. Our youth ambassadors are hosting a Heritage Soapbox event at Hoxton Hall in East London. They want more change on heritage and young people. They'll hold the HLF Twitter account between 11am and 4pm and will be using #DustKickers

Best wishes,
Jo

Think about the planned outcomes of yiur proposed activity. What do you want to find evidence of and for whom?

ACE quality metrics are useful for ACE activity, but if it's a project for another funder, best work to their outcomes framework.

Start with the outcomes then think about what provides evidence that you have got there.

Sometimes it is quantitative (we aim to increase the number of visitors from Coventry) so set a baseline (how many do we have now) and then get counting using a survey method.

Sometimes it is qualitative (participants learn more about fireflies) so think about other forms of assessment like quizzes, learning logs, creative outputs that demonstrate what has been learned and whether people processed the information.

This is super simplistic, but it gets you started. Also think about your ability to collect the data... If you have an outcome with several evidence tooks then think whether you need to use all those methods... is there a simpler way of scooping...?

Also think about data protection... use anonymous data collecting methods where possible. In case studies, remember to set up anonymous coding to protect identities. And keep any/all personal info under password protection/locked cabinet.

All the best

J

Hi Julie,

The best evaluation always starts before the project has begun J

What’s the project and what are you hoping to evaluate?

Best,

Eleanor

Subject: Evaluation

Hello lovely Gemmers

I have been tasked with writing an evaluation strategy for a project that we haven't begun!

This is something I have never done before and have no idea where to start, any hints or tips would be very gratefully received.

Thanks lots and have a lovely Easter.

Julie
