Dear Hurting and Unthanked -
Don't mean to suppress any escalation of lynch-mob mentality among colleagues with a delicate sense of decorum, but I trust that should a quality step-change within the reciprocity framework of gratitude exchange occur in consequence of the recent expressions of outrage, that the beneficiaries of this longed-for surge in pleasantries, should it happen, will themselves take time out to thank their thankers. What an ever-expanding spiral of appreciation could lie in store!
Thus will tax payers monies be well spent and the time of hard-pressed admin, teaching and research staff be put to good purpose.
Will Brexit make any difference?

I will however encourage my colleagues that do receive response to advertisements that I place to do so.

I have also experienced this and I agree; it is incredibly rude and unprofessional.
It only takes a few minutes (or even seconds) to send a standard “thank you for applying” email to someone who has spent their time updating their CV and composing an individual email to you.

Agree with you Mark. Not even a "thank you for applying". My be worth compiling list of those ignorant ones and circulating and perhaps creating a TEF style ranking system!

.uk I’m getting increasingly frustrated that when applications are made for appointments, nothing is heard back, sometimes even when I can be bothered to send a follow-up emails.
I’m seeing a pattern with this, with names reoccurring. I’m now simply not applying to those.
So can I make a suggestion, communicate better.
