Managing and sharing research data: What is new with the GDPR? Friday 4 May 2018 Room EBS.2.45, University of Essex If your research involves working with people, be it through surveys, interviews, trials, experiments, focus groups or other methods, then it is important to know the legal and ethical obligations you have towards research participants. With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replacing the Data Protection Act in May 2018, the responsibilities that researchers have for the handling and processing of personal information change. At the same time, research data obtained from people can be published in a data repository, shared and reused in future if you pay attention to gaining consent for data sharing, de-identifying (anonymising) data where needed and controlling access. In this hands-on workshop you will learn best practices for managing and publishing research data resulting from research with participants. Specific attention will be paid to new requirements of the GDPR when gaining consent, processing and de-identifying data and sharing them for future use. We will also focus on disclosure review and de-identification of quantitative data. Practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises will be used throughout. To make the most of the workshop participants will need to bring a laptop along (or request one from us) and ensure that they have installed the necessary software and registered<https://sp.ukdataservice.ac.uk/newRegistration/newLogin.asp> with the UK Data Service in advance of the workshop.
