The Science of Poetry

Dr Sam Illingworth
Poetry and science have a long and fractured relationship, with both disciplines and their respective disciples jostling for supremacy in their attempts to make sense of the world in which we live. However, these views need not be mutually exclusive, and this seminar presents an overview of how poetry can be used to help facilitate two-way dialogue between scientists and non-scientists, as well as discussing recent research into famous scientists who wrote poetry and why they did this.

Dr Sam Illingworth is a Senior Lecturer in Science Communication at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he is also the Programme Leader for the MSc in Science Communication. Sam has a background in Atmospheric Physics, but his current research involves using poetry and games to develop dialogue between experts and non-experts in terms of both research governance and the creation of new knowledge. You can find out more about Sam and his research by visiting his website: www.samillingworth.com<http://www.samillingworth.com>
