We don't have weight on the PEQs but it is part of the pre-employment safety critical medical on one site. Straddle cranes had a seat weight limit of 122kg (19 stone) when I started less than a year ago. They then purchased straddles with a weight limit of 130kg. So the message we are giving is don't worry how much weight you gain we'll just spend millions of pounds buying new cranes. The fact that the employees wouldn't lose weight to keep their jobs I found baffling. I'm all for adjustments but feel this sends out the wrong message from a health perspective.

I can see that you would need height for spirometry, Rosemary, but I would omit it from the PEQ and would only record it for those having spirometry and include it when you perform the spiro.

As Karen has said it could be construed as discriminatory, even though there was no intention of discriminatory practices. You just need somebody who gets a bee in their bonnet that you have been discriminatory to make a mountain out of a molehill. There are some people who are so sensitive, or want to make a point, who could make a song and dance about any possible discrimination and they could take exception to a  Q re height and/or weight and then blow it up out of all proportion. I know people who have been there, done that and got the t-shirt.  Best to avoid.

Hi Anne
I don’t on the basis that it should be limited to how the employee will carry out a function related to their job – so it becomes a job specific functional assessment rather than a medical assessment. If the knowledge about height and weight is a necessary part of the being able to perform their job then there is an argument for inclusion but otherwise it could be construed as discrimination.  Others may have a different view.

Does anyone still include height and weight on any of the pre-employment screening forms? I am sure that this was no longer regarded as ethical during to the Equality Act and discrimination. However with the push on improving wellbeing again within NHS staff and part of wellbeing development; I have been asked if this could be something to be considered. I would be grateful for all of your views and any legal advice also.
