Hello, this is Doreen Balabanoff, artist and architectural designer, living in Toronto Canada, Professor of Environmental Design at OCAD University (Faculty of Design).
Recently (2017) completed my PhD in Architecture UCD Dublin, Ireland - Light and Embodied Experience in the Reimagined Birth Environment. Have presented work at the Normal Birth conference twice, and have met many of you.Wondering if any of you have an interest in pursuing collaborations on birth environment design. I'm thinking of a global network - I'm interested in applying for a multi-year grant aimed at building upon the work already done in this area, and continuing to press for an evolution and a new paradigm for birthspace supportive of and conducive to less-medicalised birth.I will be in Japan (Tokyo and vicinity) May 6 - 22; and Florence, Italy June 4-22.I could pass through another location before or after. (Will be passing through Venice at either end of this trip).I'd love to meet with anyone who'd like to consider making change to the birth environment, whether freestanding, alongside or hospital 'unit.' I'd be interested in visiting some maternity units or birth centres (whether deemed inadequate or state of the art).I also would love to get back for the Normal Birth conference in Ann Arbor June 24-26, and that could be another place to meet. Please let me know (whether you are in Japan, Italy or elsewhere) if you would like to connect and work with me (and others) to further this project.BestDoreen BalabanoffProfessor, Environmental DesignFaculty of Design, OCAD University+1 647 286 2747 (mobile)
