I have committed myself to writing something about the relationship between 'my' bishop and his cathedral cities (my bluff was called when I said you couldn't really have a city without a bishop). You would have been safer saying you couldn't have a city without a cathedral (Bristol had to be made a county in 1373 because it couldn't be a city!) This might have made your life easier! But even that statement isn't completely true: Chester remained a city despite St John's no longer being a cathedral, and Westminster has been a city since 1542.
