The best known example of such a “homunculus” in an Annunciation scene is that in the Merode Altarpiece of Robert Campin (aka the Master of Flemalle), c.1420. I’m not aware of scratched-out
examples, but such scratching out may have been done earlier than the Reformation. This particular way of representing the Annunciation was denounced, I believe by St Antoninus of Florence in the mid-15th century, as encouraging the heretical belief
that Christ’s humanity was sent down from heaven, rather than the enfleshment occurring in the Virgin’s womb. There is quite a large literature on the Merode Altarpiece which undoubtedly treats this in detail.

Dear list,
I have been enjoying learning from all your emails and now for the first time call upon your knowledge. I am looking for medieval images of the Annunciation that feature a little infant Christ floating down to Mary, usually on beams of
light, where the Christ homunculus has been scratched out or otherwise removed by iconoclastic reformers. I'm especially interested in English evidence but anything will help.
