Hello all,

Was hoping to ask the MCG hive mind about their experiences with audio + multimedia guides.

We’re currently investigating audio guides and audio + multimedia content to support the visitor experience in the National Galleries of Scotland.

Having undertaken some audience research and heard from a few suppliers, we’d be keen to hear experiences from any museums who are currently using audio guides, in the following areas:

Where Used: Do you use audio guides for your permanent collection, temporary exhibitions or both?

Charging: Do you rent your guides out, or offer them for free as part of the experience?

Take up: What is the take-up for audio guides like for your permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. If you charge for your audio guides, how much of the cost do you tend to make back?

BYOD: Do you offer a Bring Your Own Device Option, such as a website or app, supply devices or do both? General research seems to say avoid apps, but we’d be interested to know about any positive experiences with these?

International: Do your audio guides appeal to repeat visitors, or are they primarily focused towards first time/tourists. What’s the take-up like for foreign language guides if you offer them?

Families: Have you used family tours in your audio experiences and if so, how popular are they with this group of visitor?

Any stories or pointers would be much appreciated :)
