These have come up a couple of times before – they are early phone cable markers. We’ve a few in the Somerset HER such as http://www.somersetheritage.org.uk/record/27013. We believe they date from the early C20.

Someone in Rights of Way here has asked what the cast iron markers are as in the attached phots. The one on the left has ER and a crown, and is by the roadside at Bushey Heath in Herts. The other is just a much better example, don’t know where. The GR one is clearly 5ft from something, but what would it be? Any information gratefully received –
