On the Record: Memories of the Anschluss 80 Years Ago
Austrian historian Dorothea McEwan (Warburg Institute, University of London) will give a short introduction to the events of March 1938 and discuss the more than ever burning question of persecution and leaving one's home country. She will show her video, 'Facing the Anschluss' (1988),  based on interviews with 12 Jewish emigrés in London, among them the composer Joseph Horovitz, complemented by a selection of paintings by Austrian war artist Otto Flatter.
Ensemble Emigré will give two musical interludes. Artistic director and singer Norbert Meyn (tenor) and pianist Lucy Colquhoun will perform Lieder from the cycle 'Schwanengesang' by Franz Schubert and three songs by Austrian composers Erwin Weiss, Hans Gál and Joseph Horovitz, which were immensely popular in British emigré circles providing, as they did, a sense of identity.
