Morning Natasha,

Dressing up is always a winner. Life jackets, sou’westers, jumpers, that kind of thing. Relatively low cost and relatively easy to maintain when items inevitably “wander off”

Signalling can be quite good fun. Semaphore flags are really easy to make (and cheap to replace, see above). They are crucially silent as well, so don’t make the annoying beeping noises of a Morse key. If you are feeling more ambitious you could get signal flags and a Popham’s code book.

Slightly higher cost, I’ve worked in a number of maritime museums where they’ve had a rope pulling/pulleys interactive demonstrating why pulleys were used to minimise the amount of hauling on board.

Give me a shout if you want to chat more about the practicalities of any of these.

Subject: Low technology museum interactives-advice please!

Good morning Gemmers!

I hope you’re well, I wanted to ask about ‘low tech’ interactives that you have found to be successful for visitor engagement.

I’m looking at developing some activities that aren’t dependant on screens or needing power supplies. The museum has a strong maritime/boat theme so anything that would fit into that overall impression that would be great! Whether it’s early years or something for older children/adults I’d love to hear what you do. These are supposed to be self-led activities that can be placed around the museum space so anything that fits in with that would be fantastic.

Thanks very much everyone, I look forward to hearing what works for you!

All the best,

Natasha
