Hi

I have used these with screens, kids are used to screens! Not bad at £145 giving up to 2000X magnification. Also several children can use one scope at a time. So might actually be quite cost effective.

Hi Lucy-Ann

I’m guessing you’re looking for a ‘dissecting microscope’, a low-power instrument with a relatively large depth of field. These are supposedly made for people who want to do things like dissect small animals, but they have a myriad of other uses, too. A lot of these are stereo microscopes, so, like a pair of binoculars, you look through them with both eyes. These are, I think, easier for beginners to use than a monocular microscope. I’m kind of assuming that you’re going to be using these things to look at things like coins and medals, so it would be very useful to have a built-in light source to illuminate the object being viewed.

Such microscopes are relatively cheap, with a variety being available for prices under £100.00 an instrument.

These look like they might be worth a punt:

They’re 20x magnification, stereo, have a built in LED lamp and sell for £35 each.  The optical quality may not be first-class but they may well be good enough for your needs.

If you’re buying any stereo microscopes its as well to check that the eyepieces can be moved close enough together to suit a small 7-year-old.

It might also be worth checking out the offerings by Brunel Microscopes:

http://www.brunelmicroscopes.co.uk/dissecting-microscopes.html

These are a bit more pricey, but rather more sophisticated, with interchangeable lenses to allow the magnification to be changed easily.

They offer a stereo dissecting microscope with sloping eye-tubes for about £85, which looks a bit more robust than the little quicktest instrument, but it ought to be as its more than twice the price!

The Brunel microscopes don’t seem to have built-in lights, though.

Hope this helps

All the best

Richard.

Good afternoon and a happy Friday Gemmers,

I’m looking for recommendations for child-friendly microscopes for children age 7-11 years please. We currently use large magnifying glasses and would like to ‘upgrade’ our session with some new equipment.

Many thanks in advance
