This is a really interesting thread and there are some great examples. I wonder if it could lead to a session idea for the Museums Association conference in Belfast, where our theme is dissent, something about how museums communicate these ideas to younger people.

Hello

Stories of children and young people taking action on behalf of future generations, aware of the catastrophic impacts of climate change and industrial ecocide are some of the most inspiring stories for me. For example,

Felix Finkbeiner, who is on track to planting a trillion trees

https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/felix-finkbeiner-plant-for-the-planet-one-trillion-trees/

Boyan Slat who invented solar-powered booms to clean up ocean plastic

https://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/wilderness-resources/blogs/remember-kid-who-invented-way-clean-ocean-plastic-hes-back-and-its-happening

And, children suing Governments:

  1. Supported by GLAN, a group of Portuguese children are taking a major climate change case to the European Court of Human Rights. In June 2017 these children watched their district burn as a result of the worst forest fires in their country's history. Taking the case against all of the major emitters which have signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights. Crowd funding campaign, have reached £20k but have now set a stretch target of £100,000.

2.                  Juliana vs US Government, set to go to trial this month. 21 young people in Oregon, US. National Association of Manufacturers, the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, and the American Petroleum Institute intervened and joined the Government as defendants against the children.

3.                  In 2012 CYP in Uganda sued the state for failing to comply with international climate-change agreements.

https://qzprod.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/cee5b-filedugandacomplaint.pdf

4.                  In 2015, Dutch CYP won Urgenda Foundation v. The State of the Netherlands

https://www.cigionline.org/sites/default/files/cigi_paper_79.pdf

5.                  In 2016, a seven-year-old girl’s climate-change suit against Pakistan has been allowed to proceed over state objections.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/1133023/seven-year-old-girl-takes-federal-sindh-governments/

6.                  In March 2017, an Indian child sued authorities for ignoring environmental regulations.

https://qzprod.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/d5131-2017-03-30indiaclimatecasepr.pdf

I hope that all helps - if it is a bit biased towards the environment. But our work on the Future Views project consulting with young people across the South East/East Anglia/Kent shows that this is one of the overwhelming concerns for young people. https://futureviewstoolkit.com/

Best wishes

Hello

We  have recently opened our exhibition called Changing Lives: 200 Years of People and Protest in Sheffield. We are running a half term event that will look at how children have campaigned for and achieved change. We know that there must be many stories of children and young people campaigners but can’t find many apart from Malala Yousafzai and Lucy Gavaghan who campaigned to stop Tesco selling caged eggs.

Please help us out and send us your inspiring examples and stories of young people and children campaigning for change!

Thanks

Laura
