I was going to say the same. Unlike with articles, it seems the accepted thing that book proposals can be sent to different publishers simultaneously.

I’ve had the exact same problem with MIT… I sent the proposal back in October and never heard back. However at this early stage you are free to contact as many presses as you’d like. It’s only when the press requests the full manuscript that you need to commit. In my case, another press responded favorably, so I did not follow up with MIT.

It is the first time that I sent an unsolicited book proposal, so I am in unchartered waters here. The MIT press doesn't say anything about response times in its website. If no answer means no, I would need to know it to propose the book elsewhere.

Any feedback from your own experience appreciated! 

Also is it ok to call the editor, or would this be considered too much?
