You seem not to have noticed, Tim, that Alison's name was brought into the conversation by David. From this there followed a series of posts attacking someone not here to defend herself. I'd call that more than inappropriate.

Yes it's in the archive, and not a pleasant read. I can perfectly understand why Sean was upset and why David had something to say about it, though I agree that it is inappropriate and it is highly unfortunate that the thing should come up again - the thing was a lot more than a 'silly squabble'. Sean was insulted abominably on this list at the time, as were others, including myself. Though most of the 'misreadings' were cleared up and apologies made (from my standpoint anyhow) it is galling to see it brought up again here as a convenient and throw-away example of something amiss with the list when the opposite was the case - it came from outside and was already very nasty and very complicated. If only I for one had realised just how nasty and just how complicated before making a stupid jokey comment.

I don't think it is appropriate to be discussing Alison, a former member of the list, in her absence.
I have met her - and found her very pleasant to work with.
Whatever the rumours, the debate on the list which caused her to leave is presumably archived.
