This is just a gentle reminder that the Food Geographies Working Group (FGWG) invites proposals for sponsored sessions at the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2018 being held at
Cardiff University from Tuesday 28 to Friday 31 August 2018. Professor Paul Milbourne will chair the conference with the theme of ‘geographical landscapes / changing landscapes’.
“Landscape has long been a central concept within geography. The conference will offer critical reflection on the position of landscape within contemporary geography.
It will also seek to develop dialogue between human and physical geographers, and engage with researchers from other cognate disciplines working on landscape. The conference will provide a broad perspective on geographical landscapes in terms of spatial and
temporal context, methodological approaches and thematic coverage.”

In keeping with this theme we would particularly welcome sessions exploring:
- Edible landscapes: spaces of food production and consumption
- Urban agriculture and productive urban landscapes
- Radical landscapes (new social movements, guerrilla gardening etc)
- Brexit and food, particularly new landscapes arising from this process
- Food justice and similar concepts - how these have shifted the landscape of geographical thinking
- Landscapes of food and waste
- Grassroot approaches to tackling food insecurity
- Liquid landscapes, particularly sessions focussing on the coastal and marine environments (fishing practices etc)
-Embodied food cultures: spaces of social, cultural, personal, political change and how they have changed the landscape of geographical thinking
-New food technologies: spaces/landscapes of innovation, changing production practices, changing consumption habits
- Decolonising foodscapes
We are particularly keen to receive session proposals from ECRs and PhD students exploring areas within the food geographies field. Ideas for formats can be found at:

However, we are also open to sessions that engage food geographies more broadly. A summary of the group’s interests can be found here:

Sessions may take the form of presented papers, panels, practitioner forums, discussions or workshops. Innovative sessions and formats are encouraged.
Proposals should include-
(i) Title of session;
(ii) Name of Co-sponsoring groups, if applicable
(iii) Name and Contact Details for Session Convenors
(iv) Abstract, outlining scope of session - 200 words max.
(v) Number of session timeslots that are sought
(vi) Indication of preferred organisation of session, e.g. 4 x 20min presentation, plus 20min discussion or 5 x 15min presentation, with 5min question for each, we welcome creative formats. Sessions last 1 hour 40 mins.
(vii) Indication of any non-standard arrangements, please note there will not be support for Skype or other forms of distance participation at AC2018. However, individual session organisers are welcome to incorporate presentations in this
format into their sessions if they feel confident they can do so within the IT setup provided (all rooms will have laptop, projector, screen, speakers and internet connection).
