Thank you, Sara. I love the idea of the pedagogy of compassion. I have a half-written piece on the pedagogy of kindness that I plan to complete one day! I think we should rehabilitate terms such as compassion, kindness and generosity in higher education. I think there's something in 'good' teaching that's akin to generosity of spirit... but of course it's not currently fashionable to write or even think in such terms. How about starting a revolution...? 🙂

On a day where I am knee deep in research on the complexities of a pedagogy of compassion in higher education (and trying to make it fit within the noise of quantitative measures ‘teaching’ and teaching for employability), it was nice to read your blog post, Dilly, especially these lines: ‘Education is an endeavour that needs to be underpinned by goals associated with social justice, by challenging systemic inequalities of opportunity. We have to ask ourselves ethical questions about what we’re doing, and not just whether the teaching-related ‘metrics’ look good.’

Absolutely agree that we should be talking about this. I just wrote a post for the HEA blog on a similar theme - asking whether we should talk not about 'teaching excellence' but 'good education' (published today):

Dear Samantha,

I love this blog.    Please forgive the re-sending to SEDA but would you like to join (if only as a silent partner on the email list)  a network of international universities who are working together on this:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jFVTCuSCOg

Subject: Blog post: The purpose of education?

Hi all,

I have written a slightly unusual blog post for me. Instead of focusing on learning analytics or data ethics I have been thinking about the nature and purpose of education.

These are preliminary thoughts based on events attended recently.

Hope you find them of interest: http://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/digital-education/2018/01/25/the-purpose-of-education/

Regards,

Samantha
