Dear all,

We’re currently advertising for a ‘Science Writer and Communicator’ in the Science Communication Unit at UWE.

The role holder will contribute to a range of materials for the Science for Environment Policy project and the ENDOWS drought and water security research engagement project, including writing for the bi-weekly SfEP News Alert, participating in content selection and promotion of the SfEP service, and preparing summaries, briefs or longer reports for both SfEP and ENDOWS.

We’re looking for a science writer with a demonstrable interest in environmental science and policy, with the ability to write about environmental research at a level and in a style suitable for specialist practitioners, interested publics and an international policy audience. Good editing skills are also important. I also expect there to be opportunities to support the production of visual research communications for the two projects – so science writers with visual/graphic communication skills are encouraged to apply.

Science for Environment Policy (http://ec.europa.eu/science-environment-policy) is produced by the Science Communication Unit and published on behalf of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment. The weekly news service is distributed free to over 20,000 subscribers and presents accessible summaries of scientific papers for environmental policymakers in Europe, as well as briefs, videos and infographics.

ENDOWS (Engaging diverse stakeholders and publics with outputs from the UK Drought and Water Scarcity programme - http://aboutdrought.info/) is a NERC-funded programme involving researchers from a consortium of UK universities, including UWE, which aims to communicate and maximise the impact of UK research on droughts and water scarcity, in a way that is relevant to stakeholders and the interested public.

This role is part time at 15 hours/week; fixed term until 30th Nov 2018 (with potential for extension, depending on funding); and a grade F (£28,936 - £32,548 per annum, pro rata). The deadline is 9th January.

You can find the role advertised on UWE’s job site: http://bit.ly/2CE2UGg (job reference: 1704736) and on Jobs.ac.uk: http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/BGN263/science-writer-and-communicator/ (which says the deadline is 7th Jan – but it’s not, it’s 9th Jan.)

Please do share with all who may be interested, and I’m happy to give more information or answer any questions.

All the best for a happy, healthy 2018,

Ruth
