That has not been my experience

I have been in the Art and Design world all my professional life. On my shelf is a well thumbed copy of Design Participation, edited by Nigel Cross. It was a collection of papers from the Design Research Society in 1971. In 1972 I went to a Design Research Society conference at Aston University in Birmingham and gave a paper at that conference. While working at the Sunderland College of Art, I wrote a thesis on the Application of Behavioural Science to Symbol Design which got me an MSc from Durham University and resulted in some new teaching approaches in Art and Design and many years of design research, all of which drew on ideas and other research in participatory design which was much discussed then amongst us Art and Design types and continues to be the subject of ongoing practice and research.
