There can not be many medievalists who have not known Phyllis: if not through her impeccable and ground-breaking scholarship, then certainly her heartfelt care and affection for colleagues. Phyllis had a special devotion to younger colleagues and students, whom she nurtured professionally as well as personally. Phyllis was generous in her advice to Carolyn and to me when we established the medieval-religion list back in 1995, and supported it online and off. Phyllis was part of the heart and soul of the International Medieval Sermon Studies Society. She was its founding Secretary, and attended a majority of biennial symposia. In later years, travel was very difficult for Phyllis, but none the less she always did her best to attend. She not only attended the Society’s most recent symposium in St. Augustine, but she even gave a poster! A great many of us, when visiting New York, enjoyed the cordial company and sage advice of Phyllis as well as the endless warmth and hospitality she provided along with her husband Earl and their son Jonathan. She is already greatly missed.
