medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Meg, The editors of *Acta Sanctorum* often included these dossiers, so exploring the AA.SS should pay off. Would you consider writing to the Bollandists in Brussels? I don't know if they would be helpful or not, but it's probably worth an email, and they may well already have a list of what you seek or could refer you to an appropriate publication. I've never used their relatively new database *BHLms* (Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina manuscripta), but it may be useful for particular saints < http://www.bollandistes.org/online-resources.php?pg=bollandistdatabases> Other med-rellers may know more about it. As well as Vauchez, whom André-Yves has mentioned above, there is also the immense bibliography of Robert Bartlett's *Why Can the Dead Do Such Great Things?: Saints and Worshippers from the Martyrs to the Reformation, * Princeton, 2015. For the Augustinian Giovanni Bono, subject of one of the earliest papal canonisation processes, as well as his dossier in AA.SS. Octobris IX, there is Mario Mattei, ed. *Il processo di canonizzazione di fra Giovanni Bono (1251–1253/54), fondatore dell’Ordine degli eremiti.* (Fontes Historiae Ordinis Sancti Augustini: series altera 4.) Rome: Institutum Historicum Augustinianum, 2002. See also here: < http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giovanni-bono_%28Dizionario-Biografico%29/ > You might also try to track down San Galgano, the 12th-cent. Italian hermit, for whom there is a very early brief canonisation dossier (the first extant?). I've lost my references but I think the text itself is here: 'Der Einsiedler Galgano von Chiusdino und die Anfänge von San Galgano', *Quellen und Forschungen aus italienischen Archiven und Bibliotheken*, 17 (1914–1924), 61–77. Michael Goodich,* Miracles and Wonders: The Development of the Concept of Miracle, 1150-1350* (2007), drew a lot of material from canonisation dossiers and would probably be worth a look. *Bibliotheca Sanctorum* (13 vols., Rome, 1961-70) is indispensable, although, like many Italian reference books, is strangely neglected in the Anglo-Saxon world. -- Paul On 14 January 2018 at 00:25, Karen Schousboe <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture > Dear Meg > > It is of course too early for your period, but you may nevertheless be > interested in knowing that one of the first formal canonisations were that > of St. Canute killed in Odense in 1086.
