HLG is delighted to invite applications from HLG members for this year's Leslie Morton Bursary worth up to £1000 to support attendance at an international (outside of the UK or your home country) conference in health librarianship, medical bibliography or medical history. Would you like to travel to Newfoundland to attend the Canadian Health Libraries Association's conference or how about Kuala Lumpur for the Health & Biosciences section at IFLA? Are you an HLG member? Read on... Leslie Morton Bursary Guide for Applicants * The Leslie Morton Bursary is open to CILIP Health Libraries Group full members. The award is not open to HLG student members * Funding is available for attendance at an international conference in health librarianship, medical bibliography or medical history. * Applicants will need to confirm whether any additional funding is being received from an alternative source. * Applicants will be expected to give a clear statement of the amount sought, broken down into conference fees, travel and accommodation and other expenses, which must be specified. * Applicants should confirm that they will be able to attend the conference if successful and, where applicable, that their line manager has given approval for them to attend. * Preference is given to those who will be actively engaged in the conference, for example, presenting a paper or poster. * The value of the award is at the discretion of the Health Libraries Group Committee up to a maximum total of £1000. The Committee's decision is final and no correspondence can be entered into. The Committee reserves the right not to award the Bursary. * One award per year will be made. Deadline for receipt of applications is Wednesday 28th February 2018. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible after the decision is made. * A condition of being awarded funding is that recipients will share their experiences with HLG members and that a meeting report, conforming to the guidelines on the HLG website, is produced. What do you hope to gain from attendance? Where possible please reflect on the programme and consider how your attendance at this specific conference is particularly relevant to this stage of your career. b) Why should the CILIP Health Libraries Group fund you? Give examples of your professional engagement and how you might share your learning with colleagues. Applicants should confirm that they will be able to attend the conference if successful and, where applicable, indicate that their line manager has given approval for them to attend. Applications must be received by 17.00 on Wednesday 28th February 2018. Judging Criteria The judging panel will consider how applicants * have demonstrated their professional engagement within health libraries * intend to share their learning with colleagues * have reflected on the potential benefits of attendance * demonstrate the relevance of attending the conference Preference will be given to applicants who have not been a recipient of an HLG Bursary over the previous 5 years. Leslie Morton Leslie Morton was an inspiration to generations of medical librarians and was highly regarded by many members of the medical profession. In every way he was a remarkable man who was an outstanding medical librarian, bibliographer and medical historian. A driving force in professional affairs he was a founder member of the Health Libraries Group and a leading organizer of the first International Congress on Medical Librarianship (1953). He enjoyed warm relations with professional colleagues in the United States, which he visited several times. He received the highest medical library association awards in Britain and North America - the Cyril Barnard Memorial Prize in the UK and the Marcia C. Noyes Award in the US.
