italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

Ciao a tutti,

I am looking for a book (in English) that can be used to introduce students to Italian culture and society and that can sparkle (critical) discussion in the classroom.
So far I have been using Beppe Severgnini's book La Bella Figura: A field guide to the Italian mind. It touches on quite many interesting topics, and serves well as introductory book, while Severgnini's often exaggerated style made it easy to reflect on stereotyping and imagery of Italy and Italians. This book is becoming a bit outdated tough, so I was looking for a replacement.

I would be glad to hear about any book or materials that you would recommend.
Grazie mille.

Cordiali saluti,

Tatiana Bruni
