I can only speak for my own institution but I can assure you that whenever we use this list to advertise it is because we genuinely are seeking someone. We also do appoint new externals (without experience), but that is likely to be limited to those areas where we have several externals and are able to provide initial mentoring.

Pay is problematic. At Brighton we have moved to a flat rate based on student numbers (three bands) plus attendance fees if more than one visit is required. This gives a little more certainty on how much you will be paid from the outset. We also review potential workloads when making appointments to ensure no examiner is allocated to too many modules. It’s not perfect, but has improved things a bit. We are also looking at developing guidance to assist examiners in knowing what the workload expectations are (I appreciate this is tricky as there are so many variables).

Hi Sam

I'm in the same position as Patsy. 14 years HE experience, a course Leader, 20+ years industry practice and experience, am part of the academic pool for our institutions course review and academic approval panels and after several applications for EE roles have now given up trying. I've now got a role as an EE for FE colleges where they seem to be much more willing to take newbies on and where the fees are better.

Institutions want experience which you can't get unless someone is willing to take on a new EE and most people who are experienced EE's are already in EE tenures.

I sometimes wonder if institutions advertise EE roles because they have to, but already have someone earmarked for the role.

Kind regards

Hi Sam

Complete agree with Patsy. It seems if you are new to the role you only get in when you have friends in places. Would love to do it but it seems institutions do not have the time to support new externals.

Hello Sam

I think it is also important to consider those who want to be an external but not able to get the offers.  I have tried a few times but there is a trend for the request for ‘external examiners’ with experience. I have 20 years’ experience in the hospitality industry including further education, and now completing my 14th year teaching in higher education at undergraduate and post graduate levels as a senior lecturer with responsibilities.  I am also completing my PhD.  Some transparency and feedback would be helpful for those who want to be an external.  I would like to hear of others who maybe in the same predicament.

Kindest regards

Patsy

Hi Sam
I do agree with lea. The fees just have not kept up with inflation and with the burgeoning pressures on academics to deliver in other areas coupled with the fact that fewer institutions are now recognising external examinerships as important for career progression The number of people prepared to take on the role is diminishing

Best wishes

Good afternoon,

I am hoping to draw on some collective experience.

Is anyone able to share with me any published guidance/best practice at your relevant institutions in the way that you recruit and manage external examiners?

My particular focus is on improving the quality of external examiners which are recruited and also the encouragement of more staff to become external examiners.
