Dear CHAT Colleagues -

I have pleasure in forwarding details of this innovative interdisciplinary conference which will be held in the vibrant university city of Lodz in Poland in June 2018:

Call for Papers: On the Trail of Betrayal 11-13 June 2018, Lodz

http://vestigia.uni.lodz.pl/index.php/en/call-for-papers/

Betrayal is an intriguing notion that frequently arouses emotions. There are endless discussions about events and attitudes associated with betrayal and its many aspects. Some acts of disloyalty are perceived utterly negatively, while in the case of others people look for justifications. But what is betrayal? Is the term sometimes overused? Do we include in it some more detailed notions? When can it be used with a clear conscience and when is it unfair to use it? The multidimensionality of the term and the opportunity for discussion it offers should arouse the interest of researchers from the fields of humanities and social sciences.

- AND THE SPECIFIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARAGRAPH FROM THE CALL FOR PAPERS:

What were the consequences of betrayal? What literary works, works of art and pieces of music or historical sources were created in connection with different aspects of betrayal? Can studies conducted by historians and archaeologists explain acts of betrayal that resulted in the revealing of a secret: a formula, technology, the hiding place of a deposit, or the time and place of a planned event? What relics of material culture destroyed as a result of betrayal do archaeologists examine? Or, perhaps, do they examine artefacts and objects created after events the fundament for which was betrayal? Perhaps betrayal was what led to the development of a settlement or a community?

Please submit papers that either analyse individual cases or summarise different aspects of the issue. In order to highlight the interdisciplinary character of the conference, we encourage researchers in different fields to analyse the issue selected from the perspective of different sciences. Each case (e.g. a betrayal of a specific settlement/man) can be the subject of research of literary historians (as a motif used in literary works), archaeologists (studies into the material remains), art historians (works depicting the issue of betrayal, the history of artists and their patrons), film experts (motifs present in films) and other academics. The analysis or the summary can thus combine different points of view to form a multi-layered image of the same theme. We also encourage you to submit papers ending with a thesis for discussion as the issue of betrayal is often very controversial and raises many questions with no simple answers. The aim of the conference is to highlight the notion of betrayal in humanistic research and to draw attention to the destructive aspects of the so-called discourse of betrayal.
