I totally agree with you but all the research I did on this topic keep on producing the same results i.e. WelCan and as I said this is way past its time. Thanks for mentioning this report I will try to look it up.

Best Regards,

Ian

I haven't heard anyone mention WelCan for years. Can you get hold of a Keele benchmarking report?

I don’t think there is a single type of measure that can describe workload in an automated laboratory, and would use all of:

* Assays

* A sentinel assay such as plasma sodium

* Specimen containers

* Requests.

That’s because each measure on its own is subject to error and artefact as processes change, eg laboratory controlled groups of tests, changes in specimen requirements, and changes related to request forms and the computerised equivalent.

Dear All,

I would like to streamline the data collected in my lab to represent the increase/decrease in workload for my lab. I am interested to hear your opinion about this matter and what method do you use in your lab to monitor workload. What is your opinion about the use of Welcan units, since this is now quite an old system which no longer reflects the advances made in lab practices over the years?

Thanks,

Ian
