Hi
I have several bone piece (often ribs of very large herb, e.20 to 30 cm), appointed to the two tips, from Kenya, with a hole to handle at the middle
They are supposed to be used to impale (through the mouth of lion) in infighting, by Maasai (kill a lion was one the condition to become a warrior, a 'Moran')
But, as different bone artifacts supposedly used by Maasai this need to be really confirmed...and could be a kind of 'fake'..
Best

Ps- I ma not on Zoobook, and i can't see the piece...

Subject: Unknown bone artifact from Kenya

Dear All,

Does anyone know what this
<http://zooarchaeology.ning.com/photo/bone-object-from-kenya?context=latest>is?
A primatologist colleague bought it in a market in Kenya, and would like to know what she has. The rest of us are curious too.

The story my colleague got was that the artifact was intended for use in a traditional Masai lion hunt. A hunter would jam this handheld item between the jaws of an onrushing lion to make it unable to bite.
This seems like an extremely effective strategy for getting killed by an annoyed cat.

Does anyone know its purpose?

Thank you!

Me too! Please invite me.
I love seeing everyone's' identifications, since it's been a long time that I actually analyzed an assemblage.
