Dear Lena!

we interpreteded a composite instrument from the late medieval/early post-medieval castle of Grafendorf/Stockerau (Lower Austria) in this direction; in this case, a goose (?) radius had been inserted into a goose ulna, and the tip of the radius was carved, the whole object was polished outside; following MacGregor, we thought this object to be a lining pen/aplicator for liquids.

all best wishes

Karl

Dear all,

I wonder if any of you have come across medieval bone pens in your assemblages? (example: https://collections.museumoflondon.org.uk/online/object/31602.html).  They are primarily made from goose radius, but there is one hare radius pen from Canterbury as well.

I know of finds from London, Winchester, Beverly, Norwich, York, Bristol and Canterbury. Are there others, and – perhaps more importantly – have they been found in other countries too?

With thanks,
Lena
