Dear Lena!
we interpreteded a composite instrument from the late medieval/early post-medieval castle of Grafendorf/Stockerau (Lower Austria) in this direction; in this case, a goose (?) radius had been inserted into a goose ulna, and the tip of the radius was carved, the whole object was polished outside; following MacGregor, we thought this object to be a lining pen/aplicator for liquids.
all best wishes
Karl
[log in to unmask]">Dear all,I wonder if any of you have come across medieval bone pens in your assemblages? (example: https://collections.museumoflondon.org.uk/online/object/31602.html). They are primarily made from goose radius, but there is one hare radius pen from Canterbury as well.I know of finds from London, Winchester, Beverly, Norwich, York, Bristol and Canterbury. Are there others, and – perhaps more importantly – have they been found in other countries too? With thanks,Lena
