Hi Jon

It is possible to design something as part of a PhD. And by ‘something’, I am not referring to a service or system but tangible, visually creative outcomes that are aligned to the practitioner-focused design disciplines such as industrial, interior, architecture, graphic, fashion or textile.

Some institutions, including mine, offer Practice Based PhDs (http://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/doctoral-college/essential-information/code-of-practice/10-practice-based/) that reduce the written component as a concession to the centrality of the designed component. It is also possible to integrate creative design practice within the conventional thesis. Having left professional practice to become an academic in the mid-1990s, I saw an opportunity to explore approaches to integrate my industrial design practice within a PhD. This ended up with a 75000 word thesis and four consumer products that enabled the appraisal and validation of new ways to practice industrial design.

A few years ago I created the Design Practice Research Case Studies website that includes examples of completed PhDs in the visually creative design disciplines for which professional practice was a central component of the data collection. Needless to say, it includes lots of images of the design outputs and is available at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/microsites/lds/dprg-casestudies/ I have to assume that there is some interest in the integration of design practice in the PhD as the site has recorded over 11000 visits/downloads.

Thanks

Mark

What would be really cool is if a PhD curriculum in design had students actually design something.
