CEU Summer University 2018
The Biological and the Social between 1900 and Today
Funded by the CEU Summer University and Fritz Thyssen Stiftung

Date: 16 – 21 July 2018
Location: Central European University, Budapest
Application deadline: 14 February 2018

This summer school will examine critically the ways in which social sciences and biology have been historically bound up, from the early 1900s until today. Social and political theories have exerted their influence on the knowledge produced in biology, while the social sciences have built their understanding of human societies by drawing on what biology could tell them about human nature. The school will examine the entangled history of these disciplines and scrutinize how scientific boundaries are drawn and maintained, and how knowledge travels across them. We will evaluate what history can teach us about these exchanges and discuss possible collaboration between social and biological scientists in the future.

The course will be taught by an interdisciplinary faculty and we are inviting applications from graduate students, junior researchers and faculty members in history, philosophy, the life sciences, public policy, gender studies, medical sociology, science studies, anthropology, who would profit from a deeper understanding of the history of dynamic interactions and mutual influences between the biological and social sciences.
