History can offer important lessons on gender. What can we learn from the history of non-binary gender? And how can the personal experiences of nurses help inform better patient care?

Meg-John Barker gives a whirlwind tour of non-binary gender so far. Starting with deep history, this talk makes the vital point that non-binary gender is not a recent thing as it is often imagined to be: indeed rigid ‘opposite sex’ thinking about gender can be regarded as a relatively new, western invention. The current non-binary movement also has historical roots in earlier feminist, queer, and trans activism where attempts have been made to understand gender in less binary ways dating back to the 1960s and 70s.

Nurse Rachael Ridley, who worked on the RCN's recent guidance document "Fair care for trans people", will follow this with some lessons for the future of understanding trans experiences in nursing, drawing on her personal experience.

This event will be live subtitled for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences.

Please note: Professor Thomas Laqueur is no longer able to speak at this event as previously advertised.
