century] by Dr. Jorge L. Giovannetti (Department of Sociology and

Anthropology, UPR-RP) will introduce the lecturer. The activity will be
held on Thursday, December 21, 2017, from 11:30am to 1:00pm at Room 238

*Description*: Cuban historiography of the nineteenth century on the slave
trade, Spanish colonialism, anti-slavery uprisings, and independence
struggles makes constant references to the "black fear" [miedo negro].
However, few works delve into what constituted "black fear," how it was
manifested, who wielded and promoted it, and what effects it had on
nineteenth-century Cuba. Examining primary documents in archives inside and
outside of Cuba, this work seeks to identify precisely how this fear was
displayed and what concrete effects it had on the respective order, racial
control, and surveillance regimes. Findings are examined through the lens
of the sociological literature on fear, to go beyond the narrative, to
better understand the phenomenon.
