Dear Dr David Cooper

My suggestion:
Get your students to read

*         at least 50 articles from a range of different leading (i.e. reputable) social-cultural anthropological journals and published over a long period of time;

* a similar number and range of chapters in edited collections of anthropological works published by reputable publishers; and

* at least 20 ethnographic monographs published over time by leading publishers of anthropological monographs

Ask them then

a) to identify for themselves (including through discussion between themselves) what about those texts' structure, analysis and argument makes them accessible and convincing - or that fails to achieve those goals; and

b) consider the extent to which there is (or is not) a single approach that makes such texts accessible and convincing.

Hopefully they will thereby learn that one cannot write anthropologically as if one is painting by numbers; and that, just as there is wide diversity in what those working out of the discipline focus on, so there is a wide diversity of approaches to doing anthropology; and that globally there is a multiplicity of anthropologies.

Anything other than that is, to my mind, to contribute to a dumbing down exercise.
Best wishes

Subject: Discipline-specific writing guides for social anthropology

Dear all,

I would be interested to hear of any good writing resources with a specific reference to social / cultural anthropology. I'm looking for material that can be recommended for Masters' level students to help with structure, argument and analysis in essays. Currently the only discipline-specific guide I'm aware of is the following, produced by Harvard University; https://writingproject.fas.harvard.edu/files/hwp/files/anthropology_writing_guide_2010.pdf<https://protect-za.mimecast.com/s/UEQRClOkn7Iz7JWNF1Akvc>

Books, online resources, youtube videos - anything you consider useful and relevant would be of great interest. Please email me directly on [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, and I'll reply to the list compiling any suggestions I receive.

Many thanks,
David
