I believe this is not a case of lack of knowledge of ABGs but of blaming a junior doctor. Trainee doctors are trainees and the senior wrote down and knew the pH was about 7 with a lactate of 11. It is nice to have the junior doctor “stress” she was worried but the senior one knew and should have gone to see the patient. Junior doctors must be expected to make mistakes as must we even being senior MDs. They are frequently overwhelmed by their workload and are dealing with several critical situations at the same time. They are also often trained not to “disturb” their senior registrar or consultant. I do not know enough of the details but destroying someone’s career and possibly sending them to gaol for medical errors in a difficult working environment is counter productive. There is no other field that I know would do this to a trainee. It is very tragic for everyone. But at some stage we need to re-examine the conditions we make junior hospital doctors work under.

But thank you for sending me the BMJ article

To me if any one is to blame it is the consultant who failed to act on information he was given.

This is a truly tragic case

The questions I ask are

1. Are Medical students getting adequate training in Acid/Base ?.

2. do we need to teach Acid/ Base to Consultants, as well as junior doctors and Medical students….? "

  ( see page 2 )

This just out from the BMJ is dynamite .....please enter your rapid responses on the BMJ website. The most obvious question from all of this is this, why was Dr Bawa-Garba ever convicted?

I with others have drafted a letter to either the Sunday Times or Times, I will submit on Saturday morning, if you wish to add your name, go to https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/letter-to-the-media-re-gmc-and-dr-hadiza-bawa-garba.html<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gopetition.com%2Fpetitions%2Fletter-to-the-media-re-gmc-and-dr-hadiza-bawa-garba.html&data=01%7C01%7Cr.swaminathan%40KCL.AC.UK%7Cc3351f85195a45ac386008d538cf3fc8%7C8370cf1416f34c16b83c724071654356%7C0&sdata=oRG%2FhfjWXmhFRH4rUmDwVM0wUjMtJqm6tCA0kexIbpQ%3D&reserved=0>
