The University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Humanities; Department of Anglophone Studies, English Linguistics invites applications for a position of POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW with expertise in variationist sociolinguistics at the newly created Sociolab.

This is a full time position for 3 years with a possibility for extension of another 3 years, based on satisfactory performance. The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Isabelle Buchstaller and the team at the sociolab with the aim to investigate processes of language variation and change in the English language. They will develop their own research agenda in the area of language variation and change/variationist sociolinguistics and will be active in the advancement of ongoing research in the lab.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in both empirical work and its theoretical implications. The fellow will publish independent research as well as collaborate with members of the team in writing joint publications resulting from ongoing research. The postdoctoral fellow will participate in applications for third party funding of new interdisciplinary research projects. They will also teach two courses per semester at the Department of Anglophone Studies (a maximum of 4 h/week). The annual salary is based on spine point TV-L 13 (100 % FTA) on the German university salary scale.

To apply: The ideal candidate has a strong background in empirical methods for linguistic analysis and an interest in exploring ongoing language change processes, both experimentally and theoretically. They will hold a PhD in Variationist Sociolinguistics, Sociophonetics or Computational Linguistics with a good publication record. A very good knowledge of modern linguistics and experience in writing/managing research grants are required. Experience in programming skills is advantageous. No knowledge of German is required.
