Professor Jonathan Grigg is a leading researcher and clinician for respiratory health in children and is the principal investigator of several studies about asthma. This post is funded by the £10 million North Thames “CLAHRC” (Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care). The Learning and Outreach Officer will support the CLAHRC’s “School-based Asthma Project” (SAP), led by Professor Jonathan Grigg. The SAP is currently preparing to run a randomised control trial of a school-based intervention. The aim of the intervention is to improve life with asthma for young people. The intervention includes a theatre play to increase asthma awareness and several interactive workshops aimed at improving asthma self-management. The Learning and Outreach Officer will assist the Outreach and Learning Manager with the organization and delivery of the intervention. The Learning and Outreach Officer will furthermore help with the visibility of the project for example by running stalls at science events. The post holder will also assist with the update of the SAP’s educational elements in close collaboration with Centre of the Cell, a science centre within the Blizard Institute. Suitable candidates will have a dual interest in science communication and research. They will need to be enthusiastic in communicating with children about science, and show excellent organisational skills to deliver a successful intervention. Experience of liaising with schools and teachers is also essential. Suitable candidates will furthermore show excellent writing skills and technical understanding when developing content for the project’s website. The post is full time, fixed term appointment for 12 months, with an expected start date of January 2018. Starting salary will be in the range of £26,717-£32,956 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
