If “the total will come close to what we have on Psci-Com list (around 4,300)”, that means that everyone on this list has a PSCI-COM qualification, or the numbers are bonkers.

I wonder what definition of 'scicom community' Dan originally had in mind.

My equation was meant in jest, Mike. But I think if you plug in the numbers, the total will come close to what we have on Psci-Com list (around 4,300)..

Rick,

I think we are there already

Isn’t the membership of the RSPB about a million and a half?

Activities at all sort of levels lead by professionals and amateurs, then there are the wildlife trusts and all the more specialist wildlife organizations.

Incidentally, I got into teaching through growing up through and eventually running what were then called Young Ornithologist Club groups.

Cheers Noel

I love replies that start 'For what it's worth..'

my own For what it's worth is that I don't have  a science qualification above O'Level

Never mind the quantity, feel the width..

the debate will be worth having when the number of people proclaiming involvement, teaching and promotion of science engagement (as well as science communication) is comparable to the number of artists, community artists - across all genres

Ten years ago the Guardian reported that there were 25,000 community choirs in UK - with half a million singers - and presumably over 20,000 or so choirmasters and mistresses - who could feasibly by called Music Communicators

I'll bet the number has doubled since then - and that's only music

I'll be a happy retiree when we have half a million community biologists guided by 25,000 Biology Communicators

not to mention the other genres...

cheers

Rick

My guess is that most professional science communicators don't have a Sci-Com masters.

Just read the messages here from people who have transitioned seamlessly from a first degree or PhD straight into the business.

I find Mico’s equation baffling.

There are even some professional science communicators who did not do a Sci-Com masters ;-)

Good question.

What is your idea of the UK sci-com community?

Does it include science writers and science journalists? I haven't seen reliable numbers for those, let alone the rest of the pack.

Hi all

I'm interested to know as a guide to the size of the UK sci-com community.  I'm also interested in any other quick ways to guage this number.  Perhaps it's been estimated in a recent report.

Thanks

Dan
