Thanks, Tim,

I wish to add some information about the new list view as we have made some changes in this area.

In the new list view, we had initially catered for combined print and ebook records and displayed as one when they can be bookmarked from one record. Our early beta partners fed back that this was not the case for all and that they often had separate print and ebook records and in existing lists and had bookmarked them in this way due to the way books were catalogued. The new list view caters for both combined or individually referenced print and ebooks.

If print holdings and an ebook link/s are captured when bookmarking we display both as one list item:

World_War_History___Broadminster.png
If it is just the ebook that is bookmarked we display just the ebook URL:

World_War_History___Broadminster.png

If it is just the print book is bookmarked we display just the print holdings:

World_War_History___Broadminster.png

The other complication described here by Northumbria is the improvement Talis made to bookmarking from Primo and Alma to capture community zone ebooks. At the point of bookmarking we also look up the ISBN in the link resolver (UResolver) and capture an eBook URL at that point. This was to address an issue other universities had in capturing ebook links that weren't stored in the catalogue record but were accessible in the link resolver as an online resource. This was seen as a welcome improvement by many.

If you want to suggest a change to this area of Talis Aspire can we suggest this be raised in ideas so Talis can understand the support from the wider community or impact this is having?

Kind regards

Hi All,

I thought it might be worth me chipping in here with a bit of insight as to the way the system identifies ebooks on the existing item page. We show a 'ebook' button if we think it is an ebook.

Talis Aspire doesn't store the fact that a book is available as an ebook as such. When the eBook button is displayed on the item page, it is because we have detected that the URL being used in one of the web address links is the URL of an eBook supplier.  We simply store a list of all ebook providers and match the URL against the domains/patterns in that list.

A similar strategy could be used to process the all list items report export. As a library, you'll know which ebook suppliers you purchase from and even which you are particularly interested in for the purposes of reporting. you could then use that list to filter out or augment each item row which had a URL. Step one would be to match the URL in the row with your list of known suppliers and then add a piece of data to that row. depending on whether you add a true/false flag or whether you add a token which represents the supplier for that item, you can then use standard pivot table or charting tools to count up all the rows that are ebooks or that have specific suppliers.

This is the sort of question that we are considering in a series of data consultancy days that we've been running with a number of customers over the recent months. If you are interested in finding out more, do get in touch.

Many thanks
Tim

Hello Valerie,
Yes, that seems to be the way that most people who have replied do it - add some sort of note about electronic books to the student note field of the relevant bookmark. Or otherwise they are able to filter on the web address column of the All Items report - but that's not possible if your print records also contain URLs (to book jackets or ToCs, etc.). But I know that there are other universities who must do something similar to us (Northumbria) as well (in terms of putting $$h [electronic resource] in the 245 field of the item record) because we have seen reading lists at other universities with bookmarks containing a format field (which is put in automatically when the record has that information in the 245 and is where the 'electronic resource' ends up).
No-one who has replied so far has said that they're using the new interface (which combines formats into one bookmark) and have also managed to delineate the electronic books in the All Items report. At the moment (in the original interface at least), bookmarking things twice (once for print and once for electronic) seems to be the common practice.

This is a really interesting thread, we have been trying to identify just ebooks from the all items report with limited success.

It seems that you need a manual intervention when bookmarking, i.e., by adding a note of some sort to identify ebooks ?

Hi Emma,
Thanks for replying.
Yes, we do something similar in the student note because when we started with Aspire in 2013 we weren't sure that students would be able to distinguish between print and eBook bookmarks - so in the latter we add ELECTRONIC BOOK to the student note. But we're currently considering how to include info about the different eBook platforms because obviously they can be very different in terms of number of users permitted, whether they allow downloads or read online only, etc.
I think the student note field is a useful way to filter (we do something similar to identify digitisations in the All List Items report as well), especially if the format isn't present in the record in a way that is visible in the bookmark.
Thanks again,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

We went live with Talis in September.  Our LMS and discovery service both have separate records for the print and e-copies of the titles and we by default will add both formats to a reading list.  When bookmarking from our discovery system we put a note in the student note field to identify that it is an ebook from a particular supplier, e.g. MyiLibrary, Ebrary, Ebook Central etc.  This note remains when the book mark is added to the list and means that when we export all the items using the all items on list report we can filter by format to get all books and then again to identify the ebooks.

Hope that helps.
Regards,
Emma

Hi David,
Thanks for replying.
The web address column in the All List Items report was something we've considered but unfortunately our print records contain URLs for things like table of contents or other publisher info, so we can't use that as a filter - it still picks up titles that we only hold in print.
It's interesting to find out the various methods other places use to address the same issue - I don't know that any two institutions will do exactly the same thing!
Best wishes,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca

We do it a slightly different way. We have just one MARC record for each book title - if an EBook is also available, we place the URL in the 856u field. So, we run the All List Items report and restrict it to show just books. Then all we need to do is filter the Web Address column - all titles which are print only will be blank, the rest will have a URL. By checking this regularly, we've been able to watch the proportion of EBook links slowly growing over the last 3-4 years.

David

Hello again,
In response to my query, I’ve had a question about my saying that "Using the All List Items report, we produce a breakdown of resource types (including the split between print and electronic books) on published reading lists for the current academic year." Someone wanted to know how I got the split between print and electronic books from the All List Items report.
In the eBook records, we put $$h [electronic resource] in the 245 field in between the title and the subtitle – when you bookmark the eBook, this causes ‘electronic resource’ to show up in the Format field of the bookmark (the resource Type is still ‘Book’). As far as we’re aware, there’s no way of manually adding Format as a field to a bookmark (it’s not in the list of options when you add additional fields).
On a list, this means that an eBook bookmark includes ‘(electronic resource)’ after the author and year of publication in the list view of a bookmark (I can’t attach screenshots, but if anyone wants to see an example I’m happy to send them some screenshots by email) – and it also means that it shows up as filterable information in the All List Items report (because ‘electronic resource’ appears in the Format column).
I’m not a cataloguer, but I’ve been told that we have that information in the 245 because that’s where it goes in the standard we use. However, when we switched to Alma and Primo we found that [electronic resource] was displaying between the title and subtitle in Primo (this didn’t happen with Capita although the information was likewise in the 245 field) – our Resource Discovery and Access team had to create a rule for Primo so that it just displays the title and subtitle. Other places may do it a different way, or maybe some are unaware that it is possible to get a Format field to appear in a bookmark? I think it will come down to what cataloguing standards you use in combination with your LMS/catalogue. I don’t know whether having the info in a different field to the 245 would allow it to be picked up by the bookmarking widget? But that’s how I’m able to get the split between print and electronic books in our monthly stats.
The person who asked me the question suggested that my answer would be of interest to other people – I’ve obviously replied to my original query in order to share it, but wasn’t sure whether it would be better in a separate post?

Rebecca
