Hi Hannah,
I usually purchase permissions from the CCC where they hold the rights, although I do check with the budget holder (my departmental head) if the quote is
particularly expensive. However I have found that these tend to be a similar price to the CLA second extract permissions, so usually fine. (The most complicated requests I find tend to be foreign-language titles that aren’t covered by either the CLA
or CCC where the publisher’s website has no English translation – I usually have to reject these unless I can find someone who understands the language enough to request the permission.)
As regards RightFind, I have only needed to use this a couple of times and do find the wording could be clearer. I had to enquire with their customer services
whether ‘all other uses’ covered the purpose I had in mind, considering I was going to purchase the specific permissions from the CCC after purchasing content from RightFind. This is the response I received:
‘Hello Catherine,
Thank you for your email. At Rightfind, we work to provide copyright compliant content, so any document we send will be cleared for the usage you enter.
If the use you require is more specific than what is available for our standard uses for individual users, I can update the use for you with a Special Permissions note on the order. You can send that in to me, and I would just add a SPECIAL PERMISSIONS: plus
the exact text you request and our team will work to fill it based on that.
I hope this helps. If you would like any specific Special Permissions text added to your order, let me know. This is information you can also add yourself
when placing the order, just for future reference. There is a field under Delivery/Service options that allows you to enter custom instructions and special permissions notes can go there.’
This wasn’t at all obvious to me before asking them, but it seems you can in fact purchase the copyright permissions at the same time as the content. I gave
them all the relevant course/student number information in the ‘special permissions’ note (as there was no form to fill in with this like on the main CCC site) and then they fulfilled the order. The only problem I found with this is that they don’t seem to
give a quote, they just charged me when they had worked out the price and sent me the article. Luckily it wasn’t expensive.
I wouldn’t have thought you’d have to pay the CCC for permissions if the item is covered by the CLA, but presumably you would be able to get the item copyright
fee-paid from the BL if it is covered by the CLA (or in the case of a chapter from a book that the BL can’t supply, like recent publications, you could purchase the book for the library then digitise the chapter). I haven’t come across a situation where there’s
an item covered by the CLA that I needed to go to Rightfind for.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Catherine

Subject: Using RightFind to get resources and purchasing permissions from CCC
Hi
We have been purchasing permissions on a pay-per-use basis from the CCC for items that we would like to digitise but that are not covered by the CLA. However, this is often very expensive and I would like to know if anyone else is doing
so or are other institutions just rejecting digitisations that are not covered by the CLA licence?
Also, has anyone used RightFind to get resources that are not available from the BL (or from other UK institutions)? When you go to purchase the resource the fee includes a copyright fee and the copyright permissions are for ‘personal use’
or ‘all other uses’. I wanted to clarify about what ‘all other uses’ means. Do you still have to pay for permissions from the CCC when:
a) the item is not covered by the CLA
b) the item is covered by the CLA
Basically any information from people who are or are not using these services would be useful!
Best wishes,
Hannah
