Dear Sarah,

I was going to second Tracey’s excellent advice – the HEng Concrete book is super useful, and obviously it would be entirely remiss of me not to mention the need for specialist advice and, potentially, the appropriate protected species licences given that all species of bats are protected by law (sorry … had to do it!), but I’ve also found this guidance useful in the past when working on similar projects:

http://www.eurobats.org/sites/default/files/documents/publications/publication_series/pubseries_no2_english_3rd_edition.pdf

p.32 has a pillbox case study.

Hope that’s useful – all the very best,

Elaine

Subject: Pillbox conservation and repair - any concrete examples?

Hello, does anyone have any guidance or experience in conservation or repair of concrete pillboxes where the roof is corroding? I’ve found this Historic England document https://content.historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/twentieth-century-military-sites/twentieth-century-military-sites.pdf/ but it is a bit thin on the detail - what steps are actually appropriate, eg painting surfaces?

Any pointers would be gratefully received

Best wishes
