Thursday 09th Nov 2017 – Satellite Applications Catapult – Space Imagery and Smart Cities – Daniel Wicks, Senior Earth Observation Specialist & Cities Lead

Synopsis: The satellite industry is changing rapidly. With so many new ‘disruptive’ technologies emerging it is very likely we are at an inflection point in the global space economy, which presents significant opportunities for anyone interested in space technology. Due to the power that satellites can bring to bear on the challenges of the modern world, the ongoing revolution in satellite services, will have a global impact. This talk aims to cover some of the major trends and associated opportunities, outlining the relevance of satellite technology as an enabler to modern business.

Bio: Dan Wicks is a senior Earth observation specialist at the Satellite Applications Catapult, a not-for-profit research organisation focused on promoting the commercialisation and advancement of the satellite applications industry. He is responsible for leading a range of projects in support of the exploitation of data from remote sensing satellites and is experienced in developing commercial applications for established and new users across a range of market sectors. Dan is accountable for strategy and management of the Catapult’s Satellite-Enabled Cities work stream which addresses opportunities for the integration of satellite technologies into cities for operational planning, monitoring and management activities. Prior to this he has undertaken roles across academia and industry, focused on the research and development of terrestrial remote sensing applications and development of emergency management services. Dan is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Thursday 07th Dec 2017 – Annual Christmas lecture – Alan Mills, MapAction, www.mapaction.org – MapAction, providing geographic support during disaster response

Synopsis: Rapid assimilation of information is vital in the days following a disaster to understand where and who is affected so that aid can get to the right place, and mapping conveys that information efficiently to the humanitarian sector. MapAction has been at the forefront of mapping disasters for nearly 15 years. In this talk, Alan will outline the history of MapAction and how we deliver our services. To give a flavour of what it is like to be a MapAction volunteer, he will talk of his own personal experiences this year responding after Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean. While the number of deaths were low and vital needs provisioned quickly, the extensive infrastructural damage across many island nations raise questions of building code and how to build back better. Humanitarian emergencies are becoming more complex and the response mechanisms more sophisticated. Alan will conclude by looking to the future and how new technology and methods will improve information management after disasters.

Bio: Alan has been a professional geographer for 25 years.  He obtained his B.Sc. from Durham University, and M.Sc. in remote sensing from University of London and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and member of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association.  He worked as a development specialist for 10 years at the UK's Natural Resources Institute in Kent, followed by two years as the National GIS Coordinator in the British Virgin Islands.  On his return to UK he has been a consultant on geography and GIS in development issues in Africa and Asia, with a special interest in small island states in Caribbean, South Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.  He has been a volunteer for MapAction for 13 years, a director and trustee  for 6 years and coordinates the charity's work on preparedness.  He has responded with MapAction to floods in Dominican Republic, Benin, Namibia and Serbia, cyclones in Bahamas, Vanuatu and Fiji, the Libyan and Syrian Migrant crises and preparedness against Ebola in Mali.  Most recently he was back in the British Virgin Islands volunteering with MapAction after Hurricane Irma.
