The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (WLLL) at West Virginia University (WVU) seeks a strong leader to serve as Department Chair in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. This is a tenured faculty position at the rank of Professor.

The Department Chair is part of the leadership team of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. The Chair will be expected to promote principles of shared faculty governance; foster a transparent culture that values and seeks input from all stakeholders; promote a culture of diversity and inclusion; facilitate professional development of faculty, staff, and students; guide the department to increased research activity and competitiveness; and promote disciplinary and interdisciplinary programming and innovation. The Chair will provide responsible and professional leadership in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department; including fiscal management, hiring and supervision of staff, evaluating faculty, and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research, and service activities.

The department offers M.A. degree programs in Spanish, Linguistics, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), enrolling approximately 65-80 full-time, graduate students from around the world, with the majority of those holding teaching assistantships. WLLL offers a B.A. in a range of programs, including Chinese Studies, French, German, Italian Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian Studies, Slavic and East European Studies, and Spanish. WLLL also fields minors in Arabic, Foreign Literature/Culture in Translation, Japanese Studies, Linguistics, and (TESOL). As the largest B.A. degree program in its field in the state, the department’s faculty also oversee numerous education abroad programs. In addition to the programs housed within the department, WLLL has a long history of collaborating with other WVU colleges, departments, and programs.

WVU is a comprehensive land-grant university that enrolls 29,000 students. It is classified as “highest research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation. The Morgantown campus is situated along the Monongahela River and Rail Trail and within 10 miles of Cooper’s Rock State Forest, and is within easy traveling distance of Washington, D.C. to the east, Pittsburgh, PA., to the north, and Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, to the west. Qualifications include a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in one of the areas of emphasis offered by WLLL or a closely related field; evidence of successful administrative leadership; knowledge of research and educational trends in WLLL’s disciplines; ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment with a range of students, faculty, administrators, and external constituents; ability to manage budgets and establish fiscal priorities; strong written and oral communication skills; and an established record of successful teaching and research that will merit appointment at the rank of Professor with a grant of tenure at WVU.
