Colleagues may be interested to hear of an upcoming conference, organized by Prof. Dr. Christa Jansohn (Lehrstuhl für Britische Kultur, University of Bamberg), and taking place between 6-8 December 2017 at the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur in Mainz. 'Brexit means Brexit?' has a particular focus on Anglo-German relations. Full conference, registration, and contact details can be found below: delegates would be very welcome indeed to attend for either part or the whole of the conference. A Symposium * *Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur | Mainz | 6-8 December 2017 * *Plenarsaal der Akademie* *Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 2* *55131 Mainz* After the British voted on 23 June 2016 to leave the European Union – by a narrow majority of 52 to 48% – the EU entered uncharted legal and political waters. It quickly became clear that the Exit negotiations would prove considerably more complex than was suggested by Theresa May’s slogan at the first Cabinet meeting after the Summer Recess of 2016: "Brexit means Brexit, and we’re going to make a success of it." Almost eighteen months after the vote, this symposium is concerned less with the question of exactly how May’s promised success story will be realized, than with the myriad challenges that the United Kingdom and Europe face with Brexit. We shall be hearing from a range of expert British and German voices from multiple fields: academic, diplomatic, economic, and journalistic, as well as 'culture and the arts'. Alongside examining Brexit's causes and consequences, this symposium aims in particular to re-affirm our many Anglo-German ties -- as well as opening up new lines of dialogue as we look to the future. *Registration is open until 24 November 2017. Delegates are very welcome indeed to attend for either part or the whole of the symposium.
