Hi all,
Please see attached a flyer with details of the Manchester Industrial Relations Society’s Student Debate which will take place on Thursday 23 November 12.00-3.00pm.
The event will involve different teams of (undergraduate/postgraduate) students from Salford Business School, Alliance Manchester University Business School, and Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, debating with each on
three topical and controversial employment relations questions. In each of these debates one team will argue ‘yes’ and one team argue ‘no’ to the respective questions posed.
·
Does HRM fundamentally operate in the interests of management and not employees?
·
Can strike action in important public services (such as schools, NHS, fire service, transport) ever be justifiable given the broader impact it has on the public and society?
·
Can non-union forms of employee engagement provide workers with any effective voice and representation at work?
For each of the three debates both teams will have 10 minutes each to pitch their argument, one after the other, followed by time to come back on each other and to respond to questions from the audience. A prize will be awarded to the best
team by the three judges (Lynn Collins, North West Secretary TUC, Professor Mick Marchington, Emeritus Professor of HRM, Alliance Manchester Business School; Michele Piertney, senior advisor Acas).
There is a free buffet and refreshments available from 12.00 midday, including registration, with the event kicking off at 12.20pm sharp.
