Dear All, Further to a message in the summer, just to let everyone know the MOOC - Humphry Davy: Laughing Gas, Literature and the Lamp has now gone live on FutuerLearn. This is a free online course based around the museum and archive collections at the Royal Institution. Created in partnership with Lancaster University the course will delve into the life and work of Humphry Davy in the context of the time he was living in. It will look not only at his scientific investigations but also his poetry and his friends. This MOOC has been created by the Royal Institution's Head of Heritage and Collections (and Professor of History of Science) Professor Frank James, and Professor Sharon Ruston of the University of Lancaster. They are joined by Dr Andrew Lacey from University of Lancaster, Professor Tim Fulford from De Montfort University and Hattie Lloyd PhD Student at UCL & Royal Institution. Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) is one of the best known men of science of the nineteenth century: he was the first person to inhale nitrous oxide; he isolated nine chemical elements; and he invented the miners’ safety lamp known as the Davy lamp. This course will consider Davy’s life and career using manuscript sources held at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. We will read Davy’s letters, his poetry and even recreate some of his most famous experiments!” This is the first time the collections of the Royal Institution are being used in this way and we would be interested to receive any comments regarding the project.
